Going through a time of self-transformation, I found myself entering a state called liminal space.
This is a state where you are shedding old beliefs or patterns – entering a new reality.
Understanding that you can no longer go back and rely on old ways of coping as they weren’t beneficial, you strive to look onwards but don’t fully know where you are going.
You therefore find yourself standing right between something old and familiar – and something new and unknown.
It’s precisely in this phase where fear of the unknown and the ambiguity of life can be so paralyzing that you may remain floating in this space for a very long time.
Naturally, this experience is expressed through my art, where I have created beings that often are soluble and lie in a tension between the abstract and the figurative.
The loss of your previous assumptive world is frightening, and for me it triggered a sense of existential homelessness. Maya Angelous assuring words; «You are only free when you realize you belong no place», are also reassuring, knowing that all of us really belong everywhere and anywhere – when we are at home in our own selves.
